A water softener is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. A few small habits keep it working well for years.

## Check your salt once a month

Open the brine tank lid and look. Keep the tank at least one-third full of salt, and do not pack it to the very top. Use the salt type your owner's manual recommends. Most systems do best with pellet salt.

## Watch for salt bridges

Sometimes salt hardens into a crust with a hollow space underneath. The tank looks full, but the system is not using any salt. The sign: your water starts feeling hard again while the salt level has not moved in weeks. Break the crust up gently with a broom handle and the system will get back to work.

## Change filters on schedule

If your setup includes filters, replace them on the schedule in your manual. A clogged filter cuts water pressure and stops doing its job. Set a phone reminder so it does not slip.

## Signs something is off

- Water spots and scale are coming back
- Skin and hair feel dry again
- The salt level never drops
- The system runs constantly, or never runs at all

Any of these means the system needs attention. Do not wait for it to get worse.
